Episode 34

Representation in Romance: Why Young Black Girls Deserve to See Themselves in Love Stories

What happens when the romance books your teen loves don't feature characters who look like them? This episode is a love letter to young Black girls who deserve to see themselves as the heroine—not the sidekick.

Octavia Marie shares seven powerful Black YA romance novels that center Black teens in stories of love, identity, and self-discovery.

Speaker:

Hey y'all, and welcome back to Culture Lit, the podcast where black

2

:

women's love stories, healing journeys,

and cultural brilliance take center stage.

3

:

I'm your host, Octavia Marie, and today

we're diving into something that's

4

:

been weighing on my heart since the

holidays, black Ya Romance stories

5

:

where black teens are the ones falling

in love, figuring out who they are

6

:

and claiming their happy endings.

7

:

Because representation isn't

optional, it's essential.

8

:

Let me tell you how this episode

came to be Over the holidays.

9

:

I was catching up with my

best friend of over 40 years.

10

:

We were talking about her daughter, my

goddaughter, who's a reader just like me.

11

:

Actually, she might be more

prolific than I am at this point.

12

:

Her goal for 20 25, 70 books.

13

:

Yes.

14

:

You heard that right?

15

:

70.

16

:

She's in her romance era,

y'all, and I love that for her.

17

:

Like always, she put books

on her Christmas list.

18

:

I routinely send gift cards

so she can build her library.

19

:

And this year I looked a little

closer at what she was reading.

20

:

I recognized a lot of the authors.

21

:

I'd heard of most of the titles,

some I'd even read myself.

22

:

But as I scrolled through

that list, something hit me.

23

:

None of the books featured characters

who looked like her, not one.

24

:

Now, don't get me wrong, there's

nothing wrong with reading across lines.

25

:

We should all read widely across

cultures, identities, and experiences.

26

:

But when you're a young black girl and

every single romance you're consuming

27

:

centers white characters, that's a gap.

28

:

That's a message.

29

:

And whether we mean to or not, it

tells our girls, you are not the

30

:

one who gets swept off her feet.

31

:

You're not the one who gets the grand

romantic gesture, you're not the

32

:

heroine, and that's just not true.

33

:

So I started thinking, what if I

could create a list of black YA

34

:

romances that center us stories where

black girls are smart, quirky, and

35

:

ambitious, shy, bold, asexual, nerdy,

where they get to be the full spectrum

36

:

of who they are and fall in love.

37

:

This episode is that list, and it's also

a love letter to every young black girl

38

:

who hasn't yet seen herself as the main

character in a love story because you are.

39

:

You always have been.

40

:

When we talk about representation,

we're not just talking about seeing

41

:

a brown face on a book cover.

42

:

We're talking about young black girls

absorbing the message that they are

43

:

worthy of love, that their stories,

their crushes, their heartbreaks,

44

:

their awkward first dates and swoon

worthy moments are worth telling.

45

:

Representation teaches young readers

that they don't have to shrink.

46

:

Or code switch or

shapeshift to be lovable.

47

:

It says Your blackness is

not an obstacle to romance.

48

:

It's part of the beauty.

49

:

And here's the thing,

we've come a long way.

50

:

There are more black authors writing

ya romance now than ever before.

51

:

But we still have work to do.

52

:

Too.

53

:

Many of these books aren't getting

the visibility they deserve.

54

:

They're not being recommended by teachers.

55

:

Librarians, they're not front

and center at the bookstore.

56

:

So today I'm spotlighting.

57

:

Seven.

58

:

Seven, brilliant, heartfelt, funny,

swoon worthy black ya romances that

59

:

deserve to be on every teen's shelf.

60

:

And if you want even more, head

to the Culture Lip Bookshop

61

:

at bookshop.org/shop/culture

62

:

lip podcast where I've curated an

entire section of black YA romance.

63

:

Let's get into it.

64

:

Let's start with seven minutes.

65

:

In Candy Land by Brian Watson

sophomore, Calvin Sch Melton

66

:

has perfected his underground

candy selling hustle at school.

67

:

He keeps his prices reasonable,

his inventory fresh and

68

:

himself out of the drama.

69

:

But when Sterling Glister, his

longtime crush, barges into the

70

:

storage closet where he keeps

his stash, everything changes.

71

:

Sterling's heartbroken.

72

:

And Calvin, in a moment of vulnerability

and boldness becomes her impromptu

73

:

therapist, word spreads fast and

suddenly Calvin's not just the

74

:

candy guy, he's the feelings guy,

the son of two famous therapists.

75

:

He leans into this role and

the money that comes with it.

76

:

But here's the catch.

77

:

Calvin's parents' perfect marriage.

78

:

It's falling apart.

79

:

He's supposed to fix them woo sterling,

and counsel half the school all

80

:

while keeping his own ego in check.

81

:

What I love about this book is how

it shows a young black boy navigating

82

:

emotions, entrepreneurship, and identity.

83

:

Calvin isn't a stereotype.

84

:

He's smart, he's flawed, he's

figuring it out, and sterling.

85

:

She's not just a love interest,

she's a fully realized person

86

:

with her own struggles.

87

:

This book is funny, heartfelt, and real.

88

:

If you're looking for a romance that's

also about growth and family and learning,

89

:

to be honest with yourself, this is it.

90

:

Next up, Reggie and Delilah's,

year of Falling by Elise Bryant.

91

:

Delilah keeps her messy, gooey

insides hidden behind a wall

92

:

of shrugs and yeah, whatevers.

93

:

She sings in her friend's punk

band as a favor, even though she'd

94

:

rather hide at the merch table.

95

:

Reggie is a dungeon master

and self-declared blurred.

96

:

He spends his free time leading d and

de Quest and writing game critiques

97

:

under a pseudonym, keeping it all under

wraps from his disapproving family.

98

:

These two meet on New Year's Eve, then

again on Valentine's Day, then St.

99

:

Patrick's Day.

100

:

It's like the universe

keeps pushing them together.

101

:

Delilah wishes she were more like

Reggie, open about who she is,

102

:

even if it's not cool, but Reggie's

confidence, it's all affront.

103

:

He's role-playing.

104

:

Someone brave enough to be

with a girl like Delilah.

105

:

As their holiday meetings continue,

they start falling for each other.

106

:

But what happens when they realize

they've each fallen for a version of

107

:

the other that doesn't really exist?

108

:

This book explores identity, authenticity,

and what it means to show up as

109

:

yourself even when you're scared.

110

:

Delilah and Reggie are nerdy,

awkward, and beautifully black.

111

:

Their love story isn't perfect, but it's

honest, and that's what makes it so good.

112

:

Now let's talk about Love

Radio by Ebony Liddell.

113

:

Prince Jones has all the

answers or so it seems.

114

:

At 17, he has his own segment on Detroit's

popular hip hop show Love radio, where he

115

:

dishes out advice to the broken hearted

Prince, dreams of becoming a DJ and

116

:

falling in love, but as the main caretaker

for his mother who has multiple sclerosis.

117

:

And his little brother,

his dream stayed just that.

118

:

The only romances in his life

are the ones he hears about from

119

:

listeners until he meets Danny Ford.

120

:

Danny isn't checking for anybody.

121

:

She's focused a senior year, score a

scholarship, move to New York, become a

122

:

famous author, but her college essay keeps

tripping her up and acknowledging what's

123

:

blocking her means dealing with what

happened at that party a few months ago.

124

:

And that's one thing Danny can't do

when the romantic DJ meets the ambitious

125

:

writer, sparks Fly, princess Smitten.

126

:

Danny's not looking to get derailed.

127

:

She gives him three dates to

convince her he's worth it.

128

:

This book Tackles Caregiving,

trauma Ambition and Young

129

:

Black Love with so much Grace.

130

:

Prince and Danny are both carrying weight,

but they're also kids trying to figure

131

:

out who they are and what they want.

132

:

Their chemistry is everything.

133

:

And the way Liddell writes, Detroit

chef's kiss Talia Bert's, highly

134

:

suspicious and unfairly cute.

135

:

We meet Bradley Graham, who is pretty

much perfect star football player,

136

:

manages his OCD well comes out on top

in all his classes, except the ones he

137

:

shares with his ex-best friend, Celine.

138

:

Celine Bangor is

conspiracy theory obsessed.

139

:

Her social media followers eat up her

takes on everything from UFOs to holiday

140

:

over consumption, but she's still not

cool enough for the popular kids table,

141

:

which is why Brad abandoned her years ago.

142

:

At least that's how

Celine sees it these days.

143

:

There's nothing between them, but

petty insults and academic rivalry.

144

:

So when Celine signs up for a

survival course in the woods and

145

:

finds Brad right beside her awkward.

146

:

Forced to work as a team.

147

:

They trudge through mud,

dirt, and their messy past.

148

:

And as this adventure brings them

closer, they start remembering

149

:

the good parts of their history.

150

:

This book is hilarious,

tender, and so much fun.

151

:

Celine and Brad are both nerdy in

different ways and watching them navigate

152

:

old wounds while rediscovering each other.

153

:

Pure joy plus.

154

:

The mental health rep is beautiful.

155

:

Brad's OCD isn't a plot device.

156

:

It's part of who he is, and Celine

never treats it as a problem to fix.

157

:

Christina Forst is one of my favorite

romance authors, so of course one of her

158

:

ya romances shows up on this list now.

159

:

That I found you by Christina

Forrest introduces us to 18-year-old.

160

:

Evie Jones is poised to be Hollywood's

next big star, following in the

161

:

footsteps of her uber famous grandma.

162

:

That is until a close friend's betrayal

leads to her being blacklisted.

163

:

Evie knows just the

thing to save her career.

164

:

A public appearance with America's

most beloved actress, her grandma

165

:

Gigi, also known as Evelyn Conaway.

166

:

The only problem.

167

:

Gigi's been a recluse for almost 20 years.

168

:

Days before Evie plans to present

her grandma with an honorary award.

169

:

Gigi disappears with time running out.

170

:

Evie enlists the help of the last

person to see Gigi Milo Williams.

171

:

A cute musician.

172

:

She isn't sure she can

trust as they conduct a wild

173

:

manhunt across New York City.

174

:

Romance and adventure abound while

Evie makes surprising discoveries

175

:

about her grandma and herself.

176

:

This book is a Love Letter to Black

Hollywood Legacy Family Secrets

177

:

and Finding Yourself in the Chaos.

178

:

Evie and Milo's chemistry is electric

and the way Forrest weaves in themes

179

:

of fame, identity, and what we inherit

from the women who came before us.

180

:

Stunning.

181

:

And let's talk about love by Claire.

182

:

Can Alice had her whole summer planned?

183

:

All you can eat Buffets, tv,

marathons with her best friends and

184

:

working at the library to pay rent.

185

:

The only thing missing her girlfriend

who ended things when Alice came out

186

:

as asexual, Alice is done with dating.

187

:

Forking her, done, but then

she meets Takumi and she

188

:

can't stop thinking about him.

189

:

Suddenly she's dealing

with romcom grade fields.

190

:

She did not ask for uncertainty.

191

:

Butterflies Swoons.

192

:

When Kumi becomes her knight with a

shiny library employee badge, Alice

193

:

has to decide if she's willing to risk

their friendship for a love that might

194

:

not be reciprocated or understood.

195

:

This book is groundbreaking

ace representation.

196

:

Alice is black, asexual, and figuring out

what love and attraction mean for her.

197

:

She's not broken.

198

:

She's not incomplete.

199

:

She's whole and she's allowed

to want romance on her terms.

200

:

If you know a teen questioning their

own identity or just wanna read a sweet,

201

:

thoughtful love story, this is it.

202

:

And finally, Audrey and Bash are

just friends by Tia Williams.

203

:

If you caught my top 10 reads of 2025

episode, you already know I love this one.

204

:

Audrey is junior class

president, debate team captain.

205

:

Unofficial student therapist.

206

:

She's desperately in need of a good time.

207

:

And then we have Bash.

208

:

He's the mysterious new senior.

209

:

Everybody's crush king

of having a good time.

210

:

It's the last day of school at

Brooklyn's Elite Cheshire Prep

211

:

and Audrey's life is a mess.

212

:

Her dad canceled her annual Malibu

summer visit, so now she's stuck

213

:

in a tiny apartment with her mom.

214

:

Stepdad and 1-year-old sister,

also known as the goblin baby.

215

:

Under these conditions, she'll never

finish her self-help book The Key to

216

:

Winning Over Stanford's Admissions.

217

:

Enter Bash.

218

:

Audrey hires him as her fun consultant

to help her complete the experience.

219

:

Challenge Five Wild Dares designed

to give her juicy book material.

220

:

He's not boyfriend material,

she's not looking for one.

221

:

They're just friends.

222

:

Except the chemistry is undeniable.

223

:

This book is smart,

soulful, and swoon worthy.

224

:

Audrey and Bash are both type A in

different ways and watching them

225

:

navigate boundaries, ambition,

and that aching, what are we?

226

:

Tension, perfection.

227

:

Plus, there's a beautiful

connection to seven days in June.

228

:

Audrey is the daughter of

one of the main characters.

229

:

It's a gorgeous coming of age story

about friendship, family, and first love.

230

:

There you have it, seven Brilliant

black YA romances, that center us

231

:

stories where black teens are falling

in love, figuring out who they are and

232

:

claiming their space unapologetically.

:

godparent, a teacher, share these books

234

:

243

It's everything.
